Appointments and Experience are not Synonymous with Desire and Performance

Conventional wisdom says that women and men who learned, created, or attained success all have one thing in common: they “showed up.” For any leadership role, especially as an Eligible Candidate for 2024 NAR First Vice President, showing up is not enough. Simply being appointed to a committee, task force or leadership position is not enough. This position necessitates a desire to enthusiastically put in the emotional and cognitive labor to perform at the highest level possible on behalf of (all) others.

In fact, research scholars from Florida State University recently revealed that past experience is not a predictor of future performance. What is important, the research shows, is that past behavior predicts future behavior.

I know this. More importantly, I want you to know that I’ve spent 40+ years connecting with REALTORS® on all three levels tackling challenges and maximizing opportunities for members to have the tools and support they need to achieve their real estate ambitions. Behaviors that have led to four decades of professional and personal achievements as a proud volunteer leader including Hawaii Association of REALTORS® State President, Federal Political Coordinator (FPC), Region 13 Regional Vice President, Global Liaison and National CCIM Institute President 2012. Download an extended list of experience and biography here.

It’s a lived experience of making the necessary sacrifices to prioritize, make tradeoffs, weigh the benefits, costs, and risks of alternative courses of action with a deep sense of determination to work harder and alongside others to achieve the best outcomes possible.

We are not born with desire. It is learned. Performance is not given to us; it is earned. Showing up is not enough. Making it happen is desire and performance, not appointments and experience.

Remember, like the men and women who paddle the Hawaiian Outrigger, building a stronger REALTOR® community, on all three levels, means working in unison for a common goal. Ours is to keep real estate professionals the REALTOR® at the center of the real estate transaction, and to always, no matter the differences in opinion or direction forward, be ever so kind to one another. As we say in Hawaii, “live pono.”

Let's unite, shape and advance this great community together!
